Kiran and Matt’s kitchen Jam

It took me a little while to process the results from last week’s Jam session. The new gear (especially the AT2050 mic) performed way better than expected but there was still some elements that I was less than happy with. Most of it was just me not knowing my gear well enough and ending up with balancing issues because of it.

That being said I think for a kitchen recording this ended up sounding pretty good so here’s a selection.

Romanian Train Song

I’m really hoping to lock down the solo and the tuning for some of the sections but that will come in time. We used the figure 8 pattern on the microphone with me getting fairly close to it and Kiran backing up as far as his kitchen would comfortably allow. I mastered this with compression and a bit of reverb.

Pigeon on the Gatepost

This is a really neat tune. I love the dark modal quality of it. I picked this out of a book of PEI fiddle tunes a while back and I’ve been really looking for a chance to do it.

Blue Bonnets over the Border

A Natalie MacMaster favourite. Kiran’s chord choices are really really interesting here. My tone quality isn’t as good as I’d like it to be I think this has something to do with the bow I’m using (and also not practicing enough) but maybe we’ll try it again sometime.

    • I’m really hoping we can continue some of this work by sharing tracks back and forth. It’s a bit of logistical trickiness but maybe we can keep doing this across a country.
